Tending the soil

As with almost everything, it’s what lies beneath that counts. Tending the soil ensures the cycle of life continues. I recently watched a farmer turning the soil in an Orford field - preparing now for crops that could take months or even a year to grow.

Rush the process and you lose the crop. Yet how much of life allows us to slow down, to sit and just be? In a world that demands our attention, and of information overload, how much space are we permitted to just settle?

We need to tend the soil. We need to nurture the deepest layers and remember who we are beneath it all.

Turning the soil and breaking up earth allows space and oxygenation to occur. If we can allow ourselves space and breath, we can observe our roots, our beginning and nature.

By grounding into presence, into how we feel in the here and now - without running away, avoiding, or rushing - we can process the information; allowing our thoughts and emotions to run through the density.

We need to gently coax the earthiness, rootedness and complexity of what it means to be human/earth/nature.

Slow is the flow.

Embers

As summer’s light and warmth begin to fade, it’s helpful to recall the flickers of light from within to guide our way.

As the moon becomes more prominent than the sun - reflecting light, rather than emitting it - embers reflect the hidden potential amongst the seemingly dark.

These flickers that remain after the dynamism of fire are tiny promises of light and warmth, that when nurtured and coaxed, can reignite flames.

Sometimes people we know go through difficult times - sometimes global events cause us to recognise the suffering of others far away. Yet hope can remain, even in the darkest times. We each carry some kind of magic, and when we collectively remain hopeful, we can cause seismic shifts to happen near and far.

Embers act as a sweet reminder that separateness is only ever an illusion. We’re intricately connected to each other. And despite this illusion that nature is something separate, we are nature.

Just like fire, we can create light in the dark, and warmth in the cold.
